Police in the Papua New Guinea capital have dispersed a crowd of angry landowners from the Southern Highlands.

The landowners had been outside the prime minister's office demanding that the government pay them millions of dollars in outstanding grants related to resource projects.

Police say the gatherings are being treated as unlawful assemblies and the participants will be rounded up and arrested.

According to a report by the ABC, the police used tear gas and fired shots in the air to clear the area.
