4:35 pm on 12 March 2012

The Socialist candidate for the French presidency, Francois Hollande, has outlined his programme for the overseas territories and promised to boost employment by spending more than 600 million US dollars.

Mr Hollande says he will stand up for overseas territories which have an interest in their exclusive economic zones as expressed by French Polynesia's ruling Tavini Huiraatira Party.

He says he will respect the autonomy of the political leaders in French Polynesia and the choice made by the Polynesian people.

Referring to the compensation claims by nuclear test veterans, Mr Hollande has spoken out for more transparency and better access to information to expedite payments to victims.

He says he will move to reopen the case of the pro-independence leader Pouvanaa a Oopa who was exiled in 1958 in controversial circumstances.
