PNG court official charged in case also involving chief justice

4:51 pm on 12 March 2012

Papua New Guinea police have charged the registrar of the National Court, Ian Augerea, with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was arrested this morning and taken to Police Headquarters where he was interviewed for several hours in relation to the estate of late judge Timothy Hinchcliffe.

This follows the charging last week of the Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia with the same offence in relation to the same case.

It is alleged that Sir Salamo illegally redirected into court coffers about 100,000 US dollars meant for the son of the Justice Hinchcliffe.

Mr Augerea has been released on his own recognisance.
