More Vanuatu provincial councils suspended

11:46 am on 13 March 2012

Vanuatu's Minister for Internal Affairs Mr George Wells has suspended the four remaining Provincial Councils of Malampa, Penama, Sanma and Torba for the next eight months and appointed four Commissioners to manage their affairs, due to reports of mis-administration.

In July last year, Mr Wells suspended the 18 Port Vila Municipal Councillors after a report on the financial state of the council showed debts of more than 11 million US dollars.

The Daily Post Newspaper reports that the length of the suspension of the Councils may be reduced depending on the investigations into their affairs.
