Tonga military poised to extend Afghanistan deployment

The Tongan and British Governments are close to finalising a deal to extend Tonga's military involvement in Afghanistan.

Tonga has sent troops, in six-monthly rotations, since late 2010, but it is due to finish at the end of this year.

The soldiers have been providing security for the British compound in Helmand Province.

Radio Tonga reports that if a new two-year deal is put in place the soldiers will continue to be trained in Britain, though Lieutenant Colonel Solomone Savelio says this will need to be funded by Britain.
