A candidate for Lieutenant Governor in American Samoa, Sandra King Young, says the territory has an educational crisis on its hands.
She has told a forum on education the number of high school students taking remedial courses when they enter the American Samoa Community College continues to increase.
Ms King Young says of 438 high school graduates who took the American Samoa Community College placement test last year only 22 students were ready to take college level courses in English, writing and mathematics.
95 percent of the students had to take elementary English, with the same percentage put back to elementary writing classes, and all bar a handful had to retake elementary mathematics.
