The Fiji Public Service Association says some 2,500 people could lose their jobs when a foreign company takes over the Fiji Roads Authority.

Fiji Times Online says the authority was previously known as the Department of National Roads.

The Association's secretary, Rajeshwar Singh, says the redundancy of these workers was a disaster waiting to happen.

He says the Department of National Roads is no longer in existence because the Authority had been formed under Decree Number Two of 2012, issued in January.

Mr Singh says also adds they have been told that this foreign company will not employ any locals.

During the Association's annual general meeting recently, a resolution was passed that government should talk to the public sector union involved in the national roads.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Ministers office Lieutenant Colonel Pio Tikoduadua said no decision had been made regarding the redundancy of 2,500 workers however, the formation of FRA was to ensure Fiji had the best roads.
