Niue shipping registry two months away from beginning operations

Niue's Premier, Toke Talagi, says a new shipping registry for the territory should be set up by June.

Legislation has been passed to allow for the setting up of a registry which will permit ships to sail under the Niuean flag.

But an MP, Togia Sioneholo is concerned about the lack of detail provided by the government over the management of the registry.

Toke Talagi says the registry should be up and running in a couple of months.

"We're in the process of finalising the arrangements to enable us to become members of certain conventions, and once we've done that, we will be able to set up the registry. I think we're now aiming at about June of this year to get it done."
