The national co-ordinator for the Papua New Guinea Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee, says cultural change is vital to end the violence directed against women in the home.
But Ume Wainetti says they face major hurdles achieving such a change.
Earlier this month the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women,
Rashida Manjoo, was in PNG and says 65 percent of females in relationships have been victims of domestic violence.
Ume Wainetti says turning this around is hampered by illiteracy, language barriers, geography, and a lack of funding,
"Private sector has come on board. Many government departments are doing things, like Health Department is rolling out family support centres, Police Department is establishing family sexual violence units, but these things are not enough, and with the advocacy work we are doing, I mean we have got 7 million people and each year we distribute just over 200 thousand leaflets. It's nothing."
