Sport: PNG approaching Olympic football playoff with confidence

1:38 pm on 30 March 2012

Papua New Guinea believe they are primed for a strong showing in Saturday's women's Olympic qualifying football playoff against New Zealand.

New Zealand was seeded directly through to the final round of qualifying while PNG had to win a four-team tournament in Tonga earlier this month.

The first leg is in Whangarei with the return leg in Port Moresby on Wednesday.

PNG coach Steven Mune says New Zealand are formidable opponents but he feels his team is also playing well.

"The team itself is at its peak now and last game we attended I held the team back - it was important that we were really focused on the Olympic qualifiers. We've now gone through the hurdles and we're now in New Zealand so it's going to be a tough one. Our players are aware of it and they will give 101 percent this coming Saturday."
