Many families in parts of Papua New Guinea's East New Britain province are reportedly homeless after floods at the weekend following a week of torrential rainfall.

The newspaper, The National, reports that floods damaged homes and washed away food gardens in parts of Warongoi, Kerevat, Vunapalading, as well as parts of Gazelle district and Rabaul district.

Several rivers burst their banks, with the Kerevat River the worst-hit, its banks breaking on Friday night.

There were no reports of deaths but it is understood many families are displaced and need help.
