Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says new approaches are needed to infrastructure development in the country, after the latest devastating flooding in the Western Division.
Mr Bainimarama has been touring the region and says the damage is much worse than in the January floods.
He told Auckland's Radio Tarana that a new approach will help avoid future flooding
"We will have to make some hard and fast decisions on what you do with infrastructure, with the rivers, with the dredging, with a whole lot of other issues so that we don't continue to get bogged down every time there is heavy rain."
He also told Radio Tarana that the damage is up to four times worse than that experienced in the January floods.
A lot of infrastructure has been damaged. The shopping areas, the villages, the settlements, the homes, the plantations and farms. There is a quite considerable amount of damage, but also to the livelihoods of the people, especially in the Western Division.
