The president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry says businesses in the town are almost totally destroyed and the Government is working to connect power and water so the clean up can begin.

The Disaster Management Office says the death toll stands at five after the severe flooding which cut off towns in the Western Division, but the Regime's spokesperson says six people have died.

Up to eight thousand people remain in evacuation centres.

Dr Ram Raju from the chamber says there is total devastation in the town.

He says business owners are feeling very depressed but he expects there will be some measures put in place to help them.

"We're just trying get our stocks and other things back in order, try and assess the situation as the days go by. There's no power or water but the Government teams are working very hard to try and restore that."

Dr Ram Raju says the owners will have to decide if they will abandon their businesses once the damage has been fully assessed.
