Fiji school attendance patchy in flood aftermath

12:54 pm on 4 April 2012

A High School today in Fiji's Central Division says attendance is very low and is not expected to return to normal for some weeks.

The Central and Eastern Division are resuming classes as of today, however schools in the Western Division will remain closed for the rest of the week.

Nausori High School was not hit by the severe flooding but says most of its students, who live in low-lying areas, have been affected.

The principal of Nausori High School, Praveen Chand, says only about 35 percent of the school's students are present today.

"We are not working on something new, we are just doing revision work here, because the student number is so low we cannot go into new things. We cater for a lot of students that come from farming backgrounds and most of their food supply may not be there, they may be finding a bit of difficulty because they live on a day to day basis. As a result we don't expect the attendance to improve this week."

Praveen Chand says the school anticipates it will take some time before the school gets back to its regular attendance levels.
