Search suspended for three missing off Palau

The United States Coast Guard in Guam has suspended its active search in waters around Palau for three men aboard a Cessna airplane that went missing on Sunday.

Coast Guard, Palau government vessels and a flotilla of local supporters had covered thousands of square kilometres of ocean in the search for the pilot Franklin Ohlinger and the two Palauan police officers, Willie Towai and Earlee Decherong.

The Coast Guard's Captain Casey White says they considered the large area they had covered in good conditions with a large number of different resources and made what was a tough decision to suspend the search effort.
