A former school teacher in American Samoa, Tone Pulou, has pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year old student when he was teaching at Alofau Elementary School in 2009 and 2010.

Pulou's plea came under an agreement with the government in which he admitted guilt to statutory rape, while the government dropped charges of sexual abuse and child endangerment against him.

The defendant admitted to having sex with the student but said he didn't know that it was against the law.

The girl became pregnant as a result of the relationship.

Pulou had left the territory when the charges came to light but was arrested by the FBI in Honolulu last year and extradited to face the charges.

Pulou, who remains in custody, could be jailed for up to 10 years for statutory rape.
