Public transport strike hits Vanuatu capital area

3:03 pm on 10 April 2012

Public transport operators on Vanuatu's Efate island have gone on strike.

The Land Transport Association says the action is to protest against the bad condition of the roads in Port Vila and Efate.

The Association's President, Donald Masing, says it wants an explanation from the government of how it spends the three million US dollars it collects in road taxes each year.

He says the money should enable the government to repair the roads.

The strike has forced some students to walk to school while those living far away stayed home.

The Association has warned that it may continue its strike tomorrow if the government response is inadequate.
