A United Nations team has begun meetings in Fiji to help assess technical needs for the elections promised by the interim regime for 2014.

The team, which is led by Angela Bargellini, has met the interim minister for elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

According to the Fiji information ministry, the assessment will help determine the types and number of ballot boxes and rules pertaining to the counting of votes.

It says this includes looking at the integrity of the process, such as a transparent electoral commission and a credible supervisor of elections office.

The last Fiji election was held in 2006 - seven months before the military overthrew the coalition government.
