Vanuatu strike ends with promise to fix roads

12:37 pm on 11 April 2012

The Land Transport Association in Vanuatu says the government has promised it will begin fixing problem roads on Efate Island next week.

More than 1,000 of the Association's members from Port Vila and rural Efate branches went on strike yesterday in protest at poor road conditions.

The industrial action affected bus and taxi services on the island.

"The Association's President Donald Masing (MAA-sing) says it asked the government if there is a budget to fix roads and says the government assures him repairs will begin on Monday."

They've admitted that it's a failure of the government because there are some technical problems. There's an Asian Development Bank - it's going to be a big project including all the roads and all the drainage. So that's the answer.

Donald Masing says he believes the strike prompted to government to act on the Association's road concerns.
