Tonga airport investigating security breach

5:06 pm on 20 April 2012

The director of operations for Tonga's airports says an investigation into a suspected security breach at the international airport on the main island should be completed over the weekend.

Viliami Maake says the captain of this morning's Air New Zealand flight from Fua'amotu Airport to Auckland asked all the passengers to disembark on the suspicion someone hadn't been screened properly.

He says all the passengers were re-screened and nothing was found.

"So there was some doubt basically on the screening process which may have instigated the re-screening requirement. And that's because of the high safety and security requirements that are observed and adopted by the airlines."

Viliami Maake says investigators are speaking to everyone involved in the flight from those doing the screening to baggage handlers.
