15 arrests in Tonga after raft of burglaries

A special Tongan police investigative team, set up after a spate of burglaries, has arrested and charged 15 offenders over the past two weeks.

Matangi Tonga reports that police have found a stash of burgled items, including a dental air compressor stolen from Vaiola Hospital, after many housebreakings and thefts that have plagued the capital, Nuku'alofa, for a long time.

The investigation team executed search warrants at 10 locations in the Nuku'alofa area and recovered thousands of dollars of stolen property, including, valuable Tongan tapa and mats, laptops, mobile phones, iPods and clothing.

The acting police commissioner, Taniela Faletau, says they are also cracking down on people who receive stolen goods, with three offenders charged so far.
