Fiji's Beddoes wary of regime's election moves

The opposition leader at the time of the 2006 coup in Fiji, Mick Beddoes, says the red flag's been raised to the Ministerial Contact Group on Fiji on issues it should keep an eye on as the country moves towards 2014 elections.

Mr Beddoes joined forces with the ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and a former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry to meet the Pacific Island Forum's high level delegation of ministers on Tuesday.

He says he used the example of well respected Wall St financiers duping investors out of billions dollars as a way of highlighting what the international community needs to be wary of.

"We shouldn't try and think that here in the South Pacific that somehow a regime that is desperate to stay in place is not going to put forward some elaborate scheme to put forward the impression that there is some form of legitimacy in the process."
