One death reported after Papua rallies to mark Indonesian annexation

One person has been reported dead and a number of arrests made as thousands rallied across Indonesia's Papua region to mark May 1st, the anniversary of the annexation of the western half of New Guinea by Indonesia.

13 protesters were arrested by security forces for flying the banned Papuan Morning Star flag at a mass rally at the grave of the Papuan leader Theys Eluay in Papua's provincial capital.

Also at the Jayapura rally, a Papuan demonstrator aged 23 was reportedly shot dead by the military.

Other rallies organised by the pro-independence National Committee for West Papua, also took place yesterday in a number of towns including Sorong, Biak and Manokwari.

The West Papua National Authority reports that a rally in Serui drew more than 10,000 people.

A series of activities to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Indonesia's incorporation of the former Dutch New Guinea were held in other parts of Jayapura.
