The Solomon Islands new police commissioner says a key focus for him will be building partnerships with the community.

Briton John Lansley was sworn in on Wednesday after the prime minister announced his appointment in late February.

Mr Lansley, who had served as a deputy commissioner with the Solomon Islands Police nine years ago, says partnership with the people is a fundamental aim.

He says as part of this, he wants to see further development of community policing.

"Community policing is [already] part of the philosophy here but to make it more visible in relation to a partnership,, not only with the government and government institutions and business but also with individuals in the community and community leaders, and to make it that everybody has a responsibility for law and order here."
