New head of Tonga's Retirement Fund surprised no women applied

The newly appointed general manager of Tonga's National Retirement Benefit Fund, Dr Leimoni Taufu'i, has expressed surprise that no women put themselves forward as candidates for the board of directors.

Six of the eight men on the board are elected and while 11 men applied no women put their names forward.

Dr Taufu'i has told Radio Tonga he has had complaints since the election about the lack of women on the board.

But he says there was a media campaign to promote the registration and nomination of names, and all groups, including women's groups, had been consulted.

He says having an all-male board will not disadvantage Tongan women.
