Solomon Islands PM disputes claim of lavish hotel lifestyle

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister is disputing accusations he has been living a lavish lifestyle at the Honiara Hotel.

Gordon Darcy Lilo is hitting back at the Opposition leader Dr Derek Sikua's claim the Prime Minister has been spending more than 27,000 US dollars of taxpayer money at the hotel each month while he awaits repairs to his official residence, the Red House.

Mr Lilo says his monthly rental at the hotel is only 2,000 which he says is in line with his benefits under the Parliament Entitlement Commission.

He says it would be difficult to find a house to rent as landlords will not accept short term tenants.

In addition to his hotel suite are two other rooms being used by officers from the police protection unit which will be paid for by the government once a price is negotiated.
