CNMI group still keen to change land ownership provisions

A group in the Northern Marianas that wants the land alienation provision of the constitution repealed is disappointed with the latest Senate move on the issue.

The Senate defeated a legislative initiative to place the question of Article 12 in the November ballot.

But the group, Citizens for Change of Article 12 , also known as CCART 12 wants to pursue gathering signatures to place the question on the ballot.

Article 12 of the territory's constitution restricts landownership in the CNMI to persons of Northern Marianas descent.

The CCART 12 chair Efrain F. Camacho says a people's initiative is now the way to go after the Senate killed the legislative initiative.

Mr Camacho says CCART has so far gathered about 2,300 signatures of registered CNMI voters.

They need more than 7,000 to have it placed on the ballot.
