A record 45 candidates have registered in French Polynesia to contest the territory's three seats in the 577-member French National Assembly in next month's election.

They represent 15 political parties as well as civil society groups and independents.

Until now, French Polynesia has had only two seats in the assembly which are being held by politicians elected under the banner of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party.

They both fell out with the Tahoeraa after 2007 but only one of them, Bruno Sandras, is seeking re-election.

The first round of voting will be on June 2nd, with those securing 12.5 percent of the votes qualifying for the second round two weeks later.
