The crew member of the purse seiner Carol Linda, who was killed at sea after the vessel's mast broke in two, has been identified as 40 year-old Manolito Galvez of the Philippines.

The Carol Linda arrived in American Samoa over the weekend and Galvez's body was taken to the LBJ morgue to await the arrival of a brother and lawyer, according to a spokesman for KS Shipping, local agents for the vessel.

Another Filipino crew members, Pardua Hilario, who suffered a broken leg was admitted to the hospital.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Steven Caskey, head of the Marine Safety Detachment unit says interviews with all those who were on the deck when the mast broke will begin today.

It's reported that the mast snapped in two, while the boat was about over 1,100 kilometres north of American Samoa last Tuesday.

About two years ago, a similar incident happened on the purse seine Deo Linda.
