Sport: Civoniceva gets shot at Origin rugby league fairytale

Queensland's rugby league selectors have handed veteran forward Petero Civoniceva a chance to end his State of Origin career in style.

The Fijian born prop has been named to start for the Maroons in next Wednesday's opening game against New South Wales in Sydney.

Brisbane's Matt Gillett has been named to make his Origin debut off the bench with Melbourne's Cooper Cronk named alongside Jonathan Thurston in the halves, following the retirement of Darren Lockyer.

Queensland is chasing a seventh straight Origin series victory.

The full squad is:

Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tait, Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith (captain), Petero Civoniceva, Sam Thaiday, Nate Myles, Ashley Harrison.

Interchange: Matt Gillett, Dave Taylor, Ben Hannant, David Shillington

18th man: Daly Cherry-Evans. Shadow: Dane Nielsen.
