Australia silent on probe of Vanuatu tiff

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it has nothing to add to the circumstances preceding last week's expulsion of Australian police from Vanuatu.

The action was taken amid accusations by the Vanuatu government that Canberra breached protocol when the prime minister, Sato Kilman, was in transit in Sydney on his way to Israel last month.

In response to the Vanuatu move, the Australian foreign minister, Bob Carr, said he was seeking an explanation from immigration and customs.

Before leaving Australia Mr Carr asked Vanuatu to reconsider its action.

The Vanuatu opposition has criticised Mr Kilman for expelling the Australian police and also urged him to reconsider.
