Solomon Islands police have arrested one of the country's most wanted men, Stanley Gitoa, after he had been on the run for five years.

The Police Commissioner, John Lansley, has told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that the arrest on Monday night followed a successful operation in East Guadalcanal.

He says police stopped a vehicle in which Mr Gitoa and four associates were travelling and all were arrested.

Gitoa, who is wanted for tension-related crimes including murder, had escaped from detention while on compassionate leave in 2007.

The Commissioner says he is likely to face additional charges.
