The Solomon Islands Prime Minister says his government will support Japan's scientific whaling programme.

Gordon Darcy Lilo made the comment before leaving for Japan to attend the sixth Pacific Alliance Leaders Meeting in Okinawa.

Mr Lilo says any stand his government makes on whaling must be based on scientific research.

"Solomon Islands government will not accept any country that goes around doing any commercial whaling. And that is inclusive of Japan. But we do believe there needs to be scientific research so we can better understand the (whale) population and how these species, life cycle, lives in our waters, in our oceans."
