Marshall Islands officials are appealing a recruitment process for the head of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency that eliminated the Marshall Islands candidate Gerald Zackios from consideration.

Five of the 10 candidates were shortlisted for an interview in a process run by a Papua New Guinea-based firm, Vanguard International.

The five are from Australia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia

Sam Lanwi of the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority says Mr Zackios has strong credentials.

They include a background as the country's attorney general and minister of foreign affairs as well as his legal training in law of the sea and his engagement in fisheries issues.
