Fiji Metservice funding issues raise concern

A professor of meteorology has raised concern about the upkeep of Fiji's metservice which also benefits other countries.

A review of Fiji's Metservice is underway and could make the organisation at least partly commercial.

The Metservice services several Pacific countries for both forecasting and weather warnings.

The Fiji National University's Dr Sushil Sharma suggested in a previous review that each country pay 15 percent towards the Fiji office.

"They've almost had a free ride at the expense of the Fiji community, paying for the upkeep of the Fiji meteorological services. However, in the past 30 or 40 years, we have not had any funding arrangements where any organisation or any country has actually funded the upkeep of our Fiji Met Office."

Dr Sushil Sharma says he believes the Fiji metservice will continue to provide a free service to other countries in good faith.
