Vanuatu police investigate deaths of elderly couple in capital

The police in Vanuatu are investigating the deaths of an elderly expatriate couple, believed to Dutch, found dead in their Port Vila home.

Radio Australia reports police believe prisoners who recently escaped from Port Vila's high-risk prison could be responsible, but they're awaiting further investigation.

Seven prisoners have escaped in a series of break-outs since late last year, the latest being on April 16.

Police also believe they were involved in four armed robberies in the capital last week.

Deputy police commissioner Arthur Caulton says they suspect that the prisoners that are still on the run might be involved.

Commissioner Caulton says their search for the escapees has been held up by logistical and funding problems.
