One of the five Nu'uuli rugby players charged in last year's assault on a Samoan referee, will be sentenced next month (June 15th) after entering a guilty plea in the High Court of American Samoa."
20 year old Pene Allardice Wells was initially charged with first degree assault but the government amended the charge to second degree assault, which is punishable by up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $5,000 or both.
Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, Wells pleaded guilty to the amended charge and acknowledged that the government has sufficient evidence to convict him if the case goes to trial.
Other defendants in the case have either had their cases adjudicated or will be sentenced soon, after reaching plea agreements with the government.
