Papua New Guinea's defacto prime minister of most of the past year, Peter O'Neill, says the 600 kilometre Highlands Highway will definitely be repaired with money from China.

Mr O'Neill has told a crowd of more than 6,000 people in Minj in Jiwaka that his works minister, Francis Awesa, will lead a government delegation to China to secure funds to rebuild the Highway.

According to the Post Courier newspaper, Mr O'Neill told the crowd that PNG will get three billion US dollars, which will be pumped into the Highway linking Lae with Mendi and Porgera.

The Highway connects Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Enga, Southern Highlands and Hela with the coastal ports of Lae and Madang.
