PNG's O'Neill calls on candidates and voters not to incite violence

The Papua New Guinea caretaker Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has urged election candidates and voters not to incite violence.

This came after reports that one man died and two men received serious injuries after violence flared between supporters of two rival candidates during nominations in Jiwaka province last Wednesday.

In addition Parliament is today expected to consider a motion for states of emergency to be instituted in the National Capital District, Hela and Southern Highlands.

Mr O'Neill says voters should use the campaign period to assess the quality of the candidates contesting the seats in their area.

He says violence will bring nothing but misery and hardship to families and the community.
