Vanuatu police arrest 50 and catch two escapees

Vanuatu police have arrested two more of the seven high-risk prisoners who have been on the run after a series of break-outs.

About 50 people have been arrested on suspicion of harbouring the escapees.

The police say they think the escaped prisoners could be behind the killing of an elderly foreign couple and a number of break-ins in and around Port Vila.

At the weekend, police arrested Jean Yves Shem and Tom Lokin.

The acting police Commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says the escapees received injuries during their arrest and are undergoing treatment at Port Vila Central Hospital.

Mr Caulton says four prisoners are still on the run and he is appealing to community leaders to help police with their recapture.
