New Zealand's Governor General has spoken of the links between Samoa and Wellington that will shape the future relationship between the two countries.
Lieutenant General Sir Gerry Mateparae is in Apia for the celebrations to mark 50 years since Samoa gained independence from New Zealand.
Sir Gerry says Samoa is a great example in the region of how to do things well:
"Samoa stands as a beacon in the Pacific about how life can be in terms of holding to their cultural values but also the democratic norm and values that people are aspiring to."
The main celebrations start early tomorrow morning and after prayers and the flag is raised, up to 13,000 people are expected to take part in a march past parliament
