The uncle of an American Samoan soldier killed in Afghanistan says his nephew wanted to join the military to help out his family.

Tofiga J. Tautolo died last week from injuries he suffered when his vehicle hit an improvised bomb in Nangarhar province.

Edward Tautolo says his nephew, who leaves behind a wife and three young children, wanted to join the military to help out his younger siblings and his father, because the mother passed away in 2006, the same year he graduated from high school.

Tofiga Tautolo's remains returned to US this week and funeral services are pending.
