Samoa's Prime Minister has acknowledged the special relationship between New Zealand and Samoa as his country celebrates 50 years of independence.

In opening comments for the golden jubilee, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, has emphasised the need for unity to ensure Samoa has a prosperous future.

But he has also spoken of the importance of New Zealand, its former colonial ruler.

"I always think, regardless of good relationships with Australia or other countries, I still maintain that we have a very, very, very special bond with New Zealand, and New Zealand should not treat us like other smaller island countries where New Zealand did not have a special relationship with in the past."

Events to mark 50 years of self rule continue until Tuesday.
