New Zealand Governor-General visits Tokelau

New Zealand's Governor-General, Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae, is due to visit Fakaofo atoll in Tokelau today, the first stop in a three day trip.

It is the first visit by the Governor-General to this remote New Zealand territory and he is making the trip on a a navy boat, the Offshore Patrol Vessel, HMNZS Otago.

Sir Jerry says his visit reflects the importance of the special relationship with Tokelau and Wellington's commitment to support the long term development of the atolls.

The Governor-General will also visit the other two atolls in Tokelau, Nukunonu and Atafu.

On each atoll, he will take part in a welcome ceremony involving the whole atoll community, a meeting with the Taupulega or village council and visit development projects supported by New Zealand
