Papua New Guinea's Defence Minister, Guma Wau, is to appear in the National Court in August on an attempted murder charge.

Mr Wau, the MP for Kerowagi, is charged with trying to kill John Augando in June 2010.

The newspaper, The National, reports that it is alleged Mr Wau fired at Mr Augando after claiming that an illegal roadblock had been set up at a village in Chimbu on the Highlands highway.

He said he had fired the shots to disperse those who were blocking the road.
