Flaws in French Polynesia election result declaration challenged

3:21 pm on 8 June 2012

An unsuccessful candidate in last week's election in French Polynesia has lodged a complaint over several irregularities in the declaration of the results.

Rene Hoffer says the official proclamation is flawed because it declares French Polynesia to be a department although its status is that of an overseas country within the republic.

Mr Hoffer says the election should be called off.

"The proclamation says that the results are for the election of June 10th but there was no election on June 10th. We are today June 7th in Tahiti. So how can something be proclaimed for an election of June 10th on June 4th when it happened?"

On June the 10th, the second round of the French National Assembly is scheduled, with two candidates eligible to stand.

Earlier this week, Mr Hoffer was detained for 12 hours and his home searched apparently in response to his campaign message that every French citizen has a right to the French RSA benefit.
