The debt stricken power utility in the Marshall Islands is to get a 2.3 million US dollar grant for a major overhaul of one of its generators.

The company's general manager, David Paul Friday, says in addition, the U.S.'s Rural Utilities Service is providing the Marshalls Energy Company with two million dollars debt deferral that will allow it breathing room to pay off fuel and other bills.

The grant is to fund a major overhaul of one of its two six-megawatt engines at the Majuro power plant.

Mr Friday says the engine is several years beyond its deadline for heavy maintenance.
