Samoa's Fugalei marketsellers told to move out early

Sellers at Samoa's Fugalei Market have been told they have to move out earlier than originally scheduled.

June 30th was to be their last day at Fugalei, but stall owners told the Samoa Observer government officials visited the market Monday and told them they have to vacate now.

The Accident Compensation Board which oversees the market is pulling down the market in Fugalei to make way for a new two story marketplace.

A vendor, Sala Samu of Malie, was quoted by the newspaper saying she will not leave until the bulldozers come.

She says the stall is her only way to earn a living for her family and she has nowhere else to go and sell her produce.

The market vendors marched to Parliament when it was in session to protest their removal from the Fugalei Market.

The ACC says June 30th is when all occupants have to leave the market and it's up to each vendor to find an alternative place to sell their produce and wares while the market is being rebuilt.

However, stall operators complain that the Vaitele market is already full and road stalls won't get them as many customers as the Fugalei markets.
