Fiji airport company looking to manage Nauru airspace

Airports Fiji Limited is looking to manage Nauru's airspace from New Zealand, part of a bid to become the best small airport in the world.

Information released by Fiji's National Archives and Library Services quotes the company's chairperson saying it is targetting Nauru because it now has world class equipment recognised by the International Civil Aviation Authority.

Adrian Sofield says the move will increase revenue for Fiji and reduce costs for Nauru.

He says the company is also looking at managing Tonga's airspace, something he says Fiji was doing before New Zealand took over.

Mr Sofield also says from next year Airports Fiji Limited will look after Solomon Islands' airspace from Australia, which he says shows the capability of Fiji's aviation technology.
