Niue marketing push sidelines smaller operators say some

Some small accommodation owners in Niue say they are being side-lined in a government-funded push to market the island to tourists.

Patricia Hunter, who is on the council of the Niue Chamber of Commerce and has holiday homes for rent, says it is hard to compete with special deals provided by bigger operators like the Matavai Resort, newly extended with New Zealand aid money.

She says while most accommodation is full this high season, smaller operators could suffer in the shoulder season.

"There seems to be an imbalance of the push towards marketing Niue in the main New Zealand area which is focused on the Matavai and perhaps two other operators who are of a commercial size to suit the travel agent industry."

Patricia Hunter says it is important Niue promotes a range of accommodation and smaller businesses get support so they remain viable.
